Workshop: Free improvisation with electroacoustic means

Electro-acoustic improvisation requires two different skill-sets: first, the ability to handle the media well enough to be able to express oneself spontaneously; and second, the capacity to interact musically with other improvisers to create something together. Unlike many other workshops, in which the focus is essentially technical (circuit bending, programming in MAX or Live, homemade electronics, etc.) this one will address more fundamental questions such as listening—to the sound materials, to the musical flow, to oneself and to the other musicians—handling time and silence, and other human and musical questions that have to be dealt with in order to do something relevant (to interact) with electro-acoustic media. You will explore these questions by improvising and analyzing our improvisations, which makes this workshop extremely practical and focuses on improvisation. The participants should bring any equipments they want to use—laptops, circuit bending, homemade electronics, amplified objects, no-input mixers, and so on—including their own amplification. The workshop will be taught in Spanish. But the professor also speaks English and French.

Well experienced improviser, composer and author, Wade Matthews (La Chapelle-st. Mesmin, France, 1955) received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition and Electroacoustic Music from Columbia University in New York, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation on improvisation guided by electronic sounds at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Since then, he started his career as an improviser with acoustic and electronic media.

Matthews has presented his music at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Center for the Arts in Mexico City, the Colón Theater in Buenos Aires and at innumerable concerts and festivals in Europe, North and South America and the Middle East. Besides his recordings for the national radios of France and Spain and for the BBC, Matthews has released more than 15 CDs for European and American labels. In 2012, his book, Improvisando, la libre creación musical, was published by Turner in Madrid. He has also guest-edited issues of Revista de Occidente and Doce Notas Preliminares, and has published in La Balsa de la Medusa, as well as authoring eleven volumes of the Deutsche Grammophon History of Music.

Since 1989, Matthews lives in Madrid, where he coordinates the improvised music concert cycle ¡Escucha! at CRUCE: arte y pensamiento contemporáneo.
